BAMBOO BUZZERS & DEVIL CHASERS

This collection follows the dry rattle and buzzing voices of split-bamboo idiophones from the Cordillera Mountains of the Philippines to West Sulawesi, Indonesia—tracing a path through field recordings, ethnographic archives, radio experiments, and museum collections. Known variously as the bungkaka, balingbing, bamboo buzzer or devil chaser, these instruments were used not only for music and communication, but also to frighten predators and ward off evil spirits along forest paths. From José Maceda's landmark recordings of Kalinga musicians to the resonant Gongga Lima traditions of the Mandar people, Bamboo Buzzers & Devil Chasers follows the sound of vibrating bamboo across mountains, forests, and islands.
