“It does not contain silence; it contains the word ‘silence,’ broken and half-broken sounds, auditory fatigue, hypnotic grooves, voices from the medina in Fez, the voices of Anaïs Nin about Fez.”
Ear Explorer is an Italian sound collective that resurrects dead sounds (usually from gramophone records). Fez is a Drug was made using a broken 78 record, two turntables, broken needles, two walkmen, some flat batteries to slow down energy, weights, aluminum foil, pots and rubber bands to create a closed loop delay so that what initially comes first comes back later, like the past that resonates in the present.
Many thanks to Marco Bazzoli, Stefano Beschi, and Stefano Zaniboni.
